Opening Doors: Interactive Career Events for Students

At Greater Than, we know the importance of providing students of all ages with opportunities for exposure to different careers. This past year, we’ve organized several events and activities to help students explore their own interests and passions.

From the "Dreams Around Alder" student board.

In April, we held a Career Day event at Alder Elementary School, bringing together professionals from various industries to speak with students at every grade level at Alder. The event was a great opportunity for students to learn about different career paths, including those they may have never considered before.

Professionals included equity experts, teachers, plumbers & steamfitters, x-ray technicians, firefighters, car salespeople, comic book editors & brokers, realtors, writers, authors, entrepreneurs, scientists, photographers, architects, and more!

This event allowed students to ask questions and learn about different careers in a hands-on way. We take care to seek out professionals from many careers and backgrounds, especially those that our students might find interesting.

We also recently organized a workplace tour for Reynolds High School students at Vernier Science Education, a company that produces science education products for middle and high school students. During the tour, students had the opportunity to learn about the different departments and roles within the company and even had a chance to test out some Vernier products. They also enjoyed lunch with employees and had a blast sliding down the slide!

Through our events and programming, we aim to create a culture of career that inspires students to dream big and pursue their passions. We know that a successful future is not a one-size fits all, and we are dedicated to helping students find the path that is right for them by providing workplace tours, career fairs, job shadowing, informational interviews, and more.

By providing these types of opportunities for exposure, students are empowered to make informed decisions about their future paths. All students, regardless of age, background, or economic status, should have access to the resources they need to achieve their career goals. At Greater Than, we are committed to making this a reality for the students we serve.
